Order without a conductor
Each firefly carries its own clock, started at a random moment. The only rule: when you sense others flashing, drift your rhythm a little toward theirs. That's it — no central pacemaker, no plan.
At first the field is a chaos of sparks. Wait. Pockets agree, then merge, until the whole forest breathes in unison. Scramble them and watch it happen again.
Measuring "organized"
To study order you must measure it. Place every clock as a dot on a circle, by its phase. Scattered all around the rim, they cancel out — disorder. Bunched together, they add up — sync. The length of their average, from 0 to 1, is the order parameter R: a single number for how organized the whole is.
Watch the dots drift together and R climb from near zero toward one.
The tipping point
Order isn't guaranteed — it switches on. Turn the coupling down and however long you wait, the fireflies never agree; R stays near zero. Raise it past a critical threshold and sync ignites, sharply, almost all at once. Self-organization is a phase transition, like water freezing.
Slide the coupling across the threshold and feel it flip.
When space joins in
Let each firefly listen only to those nearby, not the whole forest, and unison gives way to something richer: waves of light rolling across the field, spirals winding around quiet centres. The same drive to agree, but filtered through space, becomes pattern in motion.

The firefly field
Every dial at once. Coupling decides whether order forms; diversity of rhythms fights it; listening range decides what order forms — one global pulse, or a sea of travelling waves and spirals. Nowhere in the rules is there a picture of the result. It assembles itself, from nothing but neighbours agreeing with neighbours. Tune it, scramble it, recolour it.
